North Star Museum

Volunteer Position Description

Museum Assistant (10 positions available)

Do you enjoy working with the public?  Want to share your enthusiasm for Boy Scouting or Girl Scouting?  Do you want to learn more about the history of Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting?  Do you like history?  If you do, then this position is for you.  The Museum is recruiting 10 museum assistants, who will take lead responsibility for staffing the Museum during its open hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The Museum assistant volunteers at the North Star Museum’s new building located at 2640 E. Seventh Avenue in the community of North St. Paul, Minnesota.

Duties:

The Museum assistants will be responsible for managing the museum and its visitors during open hours.  The duties include:

  • Open the museum for business
    • Check supplies in restrooms (not responsible for cleaning)
    • Place cash drawer in cash register at museum opening
    • Unlock doors, raise flag over museum
  • Greet visitors
  • Attend to museum security
  • Answer visitor questions
  • Conduct transactions in museum gift shop, sales of merchandise and memberships for cash, check, or credit
  • Close museum at end of day
    • Cash out gift shop and cash register, fill out daily report, and secure money
    • Lower flag, fold it
    • Ensure everyone is out of building
    • Lock doors and secure building
  • Other duties as assigned or apparent

Standards

  • Volunteer shall be prompt in opening museum
  • Questions will be answered in accordance with museum policy, and provided documents and training
    • Questions that cannot be answered should be documented and referred to museum director for followup
  • Volunteers will be assertive with visitors who are doing things they should not be (like touching artifacts on exhibit), and alert to what is going on in building
    • Volunteers will be empowered to remove visitors from the museum if they cannot comply with behavior expectations
  • Museum gift shop transactions shall be conducted according to written standards and training; care should be taken to ensure accuracy
  • End-of-day reports will be filled out completely and cash securely stored

Commitment

  • This is an ongoing volunteer commitment, minimum of 3.5 hours per week (one shift).  The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • There will be training for these positions, held in early summer, there will also be ongoing training
The volunteer must pass a criminal background check prior to assuming duties
