RESPONSIBILITY AND COMPOSITION

 

The Board of Directors Responsibilities

The Board is a governance body responsible for ensuring that capable, dedicated leadership, related technical expertise, and adequate financing is provided in order to enable the corporation to carry out its mission.

In order to effective carry out these responsibilities, the Board must represent its constituency and should be able to:

  • Provide direction and oversight.
  • Connect community resources to Museum needs.
  • Provide support and guidance to the Museum Executive Director.
  • Establish and consider on a continuing basis policies consistent with the mission of the organization for:
    • Acquisition, disposal, restoration, preservation, and display.
    • Codes of ethics.
    • Financial development.
    • Fiscal management.
    • Membership development.
    • Property.
    • Public relations.

(The Executive Director and staff are responsible for choosing the best alternative for, and for implementation such positions.)

  • Establish bylaws, rules of procedure and terms and conditions for Board membership consistent with the mission of the organization.
  • Make reasonable judgments for issues brought before the Board.
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate the Museum's Executive Director.
  • Be legally and ethically responsible for the corporation's activities.

Composition

In order to effectively discharge the above responsibilities, an effective Board must be composed of individuals who constitute a team that has the following capabilities:

  • Knowledge of:
    • The Boy Scouting and/or Girl Scouting movements.
    • Value of Boy Scout and/or Girl Scouting collectibles.
    • Technology of Museum operations.
    • Community resources.
    • Boy Scouting and/or Girl Scouting resources.
  • Expertise in:
    • Nurturing business and personal relationships that benefit the corporation.
    • Property management.
    • Legal affairs.
    • Financial management.
    • Strategic planning.
    • Fundraising.
    • Human relations.
  • Exert influence in:
    • Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting organizations.
    • The community power group.
    • Related community resources.
  • Commitment - Board members should be committed to meeting the following board standards:
    • Attendance at meetings.
    • Committee participation.
    • Volunteering for Museum activities.
    • Financial responsibilities of organization membership.
